Roger Federer Wins at Roland Garros to Enter Pantheon of Grand Slam Great
Roger Federer breaks down emotionallyafter defeating Robin Soderling
by a comprehensive 6-1 , 7-6 , 6-4 .
Roger Federer today won his first French Open title and became only the sixth man to win all four grand slams with a comprehensive 6-1, 7-6,6-4 victory over Robin Soderling .
The second set went to a tiebreak before Federer won 7-1 after serving four aces . And , having broken early in the third set , Federer then served out to clinch victory .
The match was briefly interrupted after a man came towards Federer with a red and blue flag during the fourth game of the second set .
The man jumped from the stand opposite from the media box and approached Federer , touching him with the flag .
Later , he leaped over the net and headed towards Soderling , but the man was tackled by Roland Garros security officers and carried away from the court . Federer lost three points in a row after the incident as Soderling levelled for 2-2 .
But Federer quickly recovered his composure to join Andre Agassi , Roy Emerson , Rod Laver , Don Budge and Fred Perry as the sixth man to complete a career Grand Slam .
During the first set which lasted for about 20 minutes plus , Federer dominated the game with his usual forehands and service which are 96% 1st serves .
The match ended in a 6-1 score .
The second set however , Soderling showed incredible power as he chased Federer to a 6-6 score , forcing them both to a tie-breaker which ended in Federer's favor . Federer's consistency and patience on the court overpowered the Swedish and took control of the match almost instantly .
The third set , was incredible .
Both men are playing classic tennis as the Swede ( Soderling ) service was better compared with the last two . However , Federer's consistency was too much as the Swede couldn't shake the Swiss off his hands . Federer was constantly playing on the baseline , with the occasional dropshots that never fails , Federer finally serves the last set of the championship , and wins . The Swiss ace brought in a total of 16 aces in this match .
The Swiss champ breaks down emotionally as the world witnessed his victory and placed Federer as the greatest tennis player in history .
With tears rolling down his cheeks , he thanked his wife ( Mirka ) , Soderling and the crowd as the national anthem of Switzerland was played .
" It was really not easy to deal with my emotions , "
said the 27-year-old Federer , who lost to world number one Rafael Nadal in the three previous finals .
