Transgender woman sues LPGA over 'birth' rule
I’m not really sure exactly where I stand on this one – I see both sides of the story.
On the one hand, as someone in the comments pointed out, the change really only altered the reproductive organs and aesthetics. But the bone structure, natural strength, etc. are still that of a man. It does sort of put her at an unfair advantage in competition.
On the other hand, if the state legally recognizes her as a female, then so should any organizations operating within the state.
I don’t, necessarily, understand the transgender thing anyway. Some people see it as going against God’s plan, yada yada yada. That’s not my issue with it. My issue with it is acceptance of homosexuality.
Wait, calm down … here’s what I’m getting at. If you’re a man and you love other men, that’s fine. You love who you want to love. If you opt to go the sex change route, are you, in fact, a homophobic who is converting to the societal demands of a “healthy, functional” relationship being between two members of the opposite sex? Are you not that comfortable with who you love that you have to change who you are to make it “right?”
I’m not here to get into the “homosexuality is a choice” debate, because I really don’t know where to stand on that one either. I see both sides of the coin, though I’ll admit that I lean more towards the “born that way” side of the spectrum. I’m not here to cause people to cast stones – everyone is going to disagree on this topic until the end of time. I’ve addressed my stance on homosexuality in the past, I don’t need to go there again. (If you missed it, see here and here.)
I guess, I just truly find it sad that our society is so homophobic as a whole that people have to hide who they “really” are – behind faux relationships, or even go so far as to alter their bodies, to “fit in.” Just because it’s not “what you do” and it’s “the minority” doesn’t make it wrong. Even if it is wrong, it is not your place to judge it to be that way. Do you really want to cast stones at someone over their sexuality – because you know as well as I do that they could turn around and cast some at you for a myriad of other things in your life.
I am also aware of the fact that many transgender individuals just felt they identified with the opposite gender, so they got the surgery to fix that. (I believe that’s Chas Bono’s story.) I’m not going to judge that either because, whereas I can’t relate to the sentiment, I think I can understand, at least somewhat, where they are coming from. Then again, you must wonder if it ties back to my point above about not feeling like they identify with their gender due to their orientation.
Orientation – that’s a funny term to me, actually. Given the fact I work in a technical environment, to us, it’s either portrait or landscape. In society, it’s either gay or straight. The thing is, technically-speaking, there’s nothing wrong with portrait or landscape – it’s just a matter of perspective. I sort of wish society would realize that as well regarding the gay or straight debate – it’s just a matter of perspective, and neither is right or wrong. You just look at it a slightly different way.
I will reiterate a point I’ve always made – it takes all kinds to make the world go around. It makes life interesting. If we all had the same type of relationship, views on life, it would be boring. I invite you all to post your comments about this topic (particularly the one that sparked this whole post, which is the LPGA issue), but remember to keep the hate out of it. I post things like this to open your eyes, to prove that I’m not all sarcasm (just mostly), and to generate intelligent discussion.
