Lymbyc Systym performs at Spanish Moon
When: Friday, July 10
Where: The Spanish Moon
Group of two members creating a “band sound” with only two members. Lymbyc Systym, made by a duo of siblings Mike and Jared Bell ageing 20 approx, can not only create a traditional sound, but they can also make that sound uniquely their own.
"I play an electric piano and an older keyboard called the Clavinet. It has a little synth and a sampler. And Mike has his drum set, a Glockenspiel and a computer. That's basically our live set up," Jared said.
Even though Jared thinks he got off to a late start developing his musical chops, don't think of the Bell brothers as some anemic-sounding synthesizer nerds. Lymbyc Systym has been fine-tuning their music for years.
"I didn't start playing until I was maybe 14. I just kind of had a little Casio keyboard that I was messing around with. And Mike had always played drums in full bands," Jared said.
Like so many musicians, Mike and Jared Bell were influenced by the Beatles, but their earliest songwriting efforts came as they jammed together until they would stumble onto something cool. They would then turn that jewel into a song.
"We played basic rock stuff, but we also very quickly got into a lot of jazz, and even like weirder Ornette Coleman and kind of experimental jazz,” Jared said.
The duo started experimenting with loops, beats and riffs in 2001. Four years later, Lymbyc Systym issued “Carved by Glaciers” as a five-song, self-released EP, which created a buzz for the Bell brothers beyond their home state of Arizona.
Lots of live shows followed across North America, Japan and Europe, but somehow this first release slipped out of print. That changed in 2008 when the Bell brothers signed with Magic Bullet Records.
At first, the label was focused on Lymbyc Systym's new offering, called “Field Studies,” as a combination package with This Will Destroy You, another act on the Magic Bullet Records roster. However, the brothers soon struck a deal with the record label to make “Carved by Glaciers” available again as a vinyl LP, CD and downloadable digital file.
Lymbyc Systym also got a small burst of unexpected Hollywood cool when one of their songs called “Rest Easy/Age Kindly” was featured on an episode of the hit TV show, “CSI: Miami.”
Yet, even with television exposure and their far-reaching tours, the main focus of the duo is still to connect with their listeners.
"Maybe what most musicians are trying to do is taking all of their influences in music that they think are worthwhile and adding something new to the discussion," Jared said. "That's what we try to do and hopefully that's the recipe for timeless music. I guess we'll have to see how it turns out."
Lymbyc Systym will play on Friday, July 10, at the Spanish Moon. For more information on the band, go to
