History and Animals: Elephants

Hannibal (247-183 BC) was a general who led the army of Carthage in its war against the Romans between 218 and 201 BC. Hannibal is known especially for having crossed the Alps into Italy with a large army and 37 war elephants. By marching an army from Iberia over the Pyrenees mountains and the Alps mountains into northern Italy, he defeated the Romans in a series of battles. Hannibal is considered as one of the greatest military commanders in history and the mystery of how he crossed th Alps in 218 BCE with an army accompanied by 25000 men and 37 elephants has fascinated historians of all times.
