The World of Adventure: Pirates

A pirate is a person who sails the seas stopping and robbing ships at sea. Pirates in stories often speak roughly, drink a lot, especially rum (= a strong alcoholic drink made from the juice of sugarcane) and have a parrot on their shoulder. They sometimes wear a black patch over one eye and have a wooden leg. They also use phrases which are connected especially with pirates, e.g. "Shiver me timbers" (= used as a phrase showing great surprise).
Pirates' flags show a sign for death or danger consisting of a picture of a skull with two long bones crossed below it. The black flag with a picture of a white skull and crossbones on it used by pirates is called Jolly Roger.

A parrot is any of a large group of usually tropical birds that have a curved beak and usually brightly coloured feathers. Some of these birds can be taught to copy human speech. They are sometimes taken to other countries and kept as pets. Polly is a traditional name for a parrot, and parrots are often taught to say "pretty Polly".
