Very British: Highland Dress

Highland dress is a set of clothes worn by some Scottish men on special occasions, for example at a wedding. Highland dress consists of a short black jacket, a bow tie, a kilt and long socks with a small knife kept under the fold at the top of one of the socks.

Kilt

A kilt is a skirt with many pressed folds at the back and sides, and usually of a tartan pattern, worn especially by Scotsmen. People often make jokes about the fact that men are believed to wear nothing under their kilts.

Sgian dubh

The sgian dubh is a ceremonial knife (Gaelic sgian) worn as part of the modern Scottish Highland dress along with the kilt. It is worn tucked into the hose with only the pommel visible. The sgian dubh is normally worn on the right leg, but can also be worn on the left, depending on whether the wearer is right or left-handed.
