Jack: More Than A Name

The Name Jack

The name Jack is a familiar nickname of, or substitute for, John. It has many meanings in English:

1. (Informal English) A man; a fellow.
2. One who does odd or heavy jobs; a labourer.
3. One who works in a specified manual trade. Often used in combination: a lumberjack; a steeplejack.
4. Jack A sailor; a tar.
5. A playing card showing the figure of a servant or soldier and ranking below a queen. Also called knave.
6. A usually portable device for raising heavy objects by means of force applied with a lever, screw, or hydraulic press.
7. A small flag flown at the bow of a ship, usually to indicate nationality.
8. The male of certain animals, especially the ass or the donkey.
9. A large, California rock fish; called also boccaccio, and merou.
10. A large tree common in the East Indies. The wood is of a yellow colour, fine grain, and rather heavy, and is much used in cabinetwork. It is also used for dyeing a brilliant yellow.
11. (Slang) Money.
12. (Slang) A small or worthless amount: You don't know jack about that.

Jack Frost

Jack Frost is frost or very cold weather though of as a person. Children are told that Jack Frost comes at night and leaves frost on the windows.

Jack-in-the-box

A jack-in-the-box is a children's toy which is a box from which an amusing figure on a spring jumps when the top is opened.

Jack in the Box

Jack in the Box is a type of American fast food restaurant that sells hamburgers and Mexican food.

Jack-of-all-trades

A Jack-of-all-trades is a person who can do many kinds of work but who may not be very good at any of them.

Jack-o-lantern

A Jack-o-lantern is a lamp made by putting a candle inside a hollow pumpkin which has had holes cut into it in the shape of eyes and mouth. Jack-o-lanterns are often made at Halloween.

Jack Russell

A Jack Russell terrier is small short-haired dog with short legs. A Jack Russell is white with black or brown markings.
