Food & Cooking: Salads

A salad is a mixture of usually raw vegetables served cold either with a main dish or, especailly with other foods added, as a main dish on its own:
a cheese/ham/egg salad

It can also contain raw or cold cooked food cut into pieces and usually mixed with a thick sharp-tasting liquid:
potato salad

Fruit Salad is a dish consisting of sweet fruits cut up and served in a syrup; it is often sold canned.

Waldorf salad is typically made of apples and celery with nuts or raisins and dressed with mayonnaise

A green salad is one having lettuce and other green vegetables.

A salad bar is a buffet-style table or counter at a restaurant on which salad components are provided for customers to assemble their own salad plates. Most salad bars provide lettuce, chopped tomatoes, assorted raw, sliced vegetable (such as cucumbers and celery), dried bread croutons, bacon bits, shredded cheese, and various types of salad dressing. Some salad bars also have additional food items such as cooked cold meats (e.g., chicken and ham), deviled eggs, cold pasta salads, corn chips, bread rolls, soup, and fresh cut fruit slices.

Salad days is an expression that refers to one's time of youth and inexperience.

Did you know?

There is plant called the Fruit Salad Plant or the Swiss Cheese Plant as the ripened fruit has a pineapple-banana odour and fruit salad taste. The mature fruit has a yellow-green, violet-spotted rind of hexagonal plates covering a creamy-white, soft pulp. It is highly ornamental and an excellent choice for heavily shaded positions. Its botanical name is Monstera Deliciosa (also called Monster fruit, Mexican Breadfruit, and Wild Honey) and it is a creeping vine native to tropical rainforests from southern Mexico south to Panama.
