Language & Nationalities: Turkish

Turkey is a country in both Europe and Asia. Turkey's official language is Turkish.
The capital city is Ankara. The cultural and economic centre is Istanbul. In the past Istanbul was known as Constantinople.
Turkey became a republic in 1923 and its first president was Atatürki. Before that, the Turkish Republic was part of the Ottoman Empire. Atatürk made many changes that made Turkey more modern.
There are several expressions in the English language related to the adjective Turkish:

Turkish bath

a. A steam bath that induces heavy perspiration in the bather and is followed by a shower and massage.
b. An establishment where facilities are available for Turkish baths.
2. An extremely hot place

Turkish coffee

very strong black coffee made with finely ground coffee beans, usually sweetened.


Turkish delight

a jelly-like sweet flavoured with flower essences, usually cut into cubes and covered in icing sugar.

Turkish sponge

a very fine and superior variety of Mediterranean sponge (Spongia officinalis, variety Mediterranea); - called also Toilet sponge.

Turkish tobacco

a fragrant dark tobacco cultivated in Eastern Europe, esp Turkey and Greece.

Turkish towel

A thick towel with a nap of uncut pile.
