An eye for an eye

I’m going to get on a political soapbox today. Why? Because I am too mentally exhausted to go out searching for something entertaining. (What happened to you guys sending me blog ideas anyway? Slackers.)

So, yeah, here’s the short version (click here for the whole story) – this guy broke into a house in Connecticut in 2007 and he beat the crap out of the dad, and killed the mom and two kids. Today he was sentenced to death, as opposed to life without parole.

Here’s the most disturbing part for me:
Lawyers for Hayes said that their client was "happy with the verdict" and had "got what he wanted."

"The fact of the matter is that a life sentence without the possibility of release is the most brutal punishment," said Thomas Ullmann. "For [Hayes], this is an easy way out."

I had the same mentality for Timothy McVeigh. If he wants to die, then you stick his butt in a cell for the rest of his sorry life. Whatever punishment he views to be the worst, make sure he gets it.

I supported not executing McVeigh, and it wasn’t because he was such a good guy. It was because he wanted to die. For what he did, he didn’t deserve to get what he wanted. Period.

Yes, I know, it’s a drain on the taxpayers, it’s a drain on the system. You’re right, and I won’t deny that.

I figure, though, it can even out. The idiots who keep appealing their cases cause they don’t want to die – kill ‘em. They did it, they’re guilty, and they probably aren’t sorry – they are just riding out the legal system as long as possible to make their wretched little lives a little bit longer at my expense.

But to those who are willing to go into the death chamber, those who smile when they are sentenced to death, don’t kill them. Don’t give them what they want. Lock them away in a dark hole somewhere. It doesn’t have to be a nice criminal facility, just one decent enough to pass the “cruel and unusual punishment” rule. (If they choose to kill themselves, a la the Craigslist Killer, fine. Let them.)

I know it’s a twisted view of things – but, honestly, when haven’t I had a twisted view of things?

I just know that when my two-year-old screams and cries for something she wants, I won’t give into her (okay, well, not every time) because she doesn’t deserve it because of her behavior. She did wrong, and I won’t reward that with what she wants. (No, I will not consider the death penalty for my kid – but let’s face it, my kid isn’t going to break into a house, beat a guy with a baseball bat and murder the rest of his family either. So, you can’t make the argument the other way. Don’t even try.)

There are criminals out there who will do whatever it is they do, simply because they want to be in jail – because they want four walls and three meals a day (and cable TV, prime exercise equipment, the educational opportunities and other amenities a trip to Club Fed brings these days). In those instances, put them under house arrest – make them work and pay their bills. If they don’t work, they don’t eat. Easy enough. (Welcome to the real world people!) Don’t let these people get what they want by doing wrong. It’s a further abuse of the system, and one that just proves what a pussy society we are. We don’t chop off hands for shoplifting here.

Shoot, just a couple weeks ago, two teenage girls were caught in Somalia for being spies. Guess what – less than a week later both of them had already been tried, convicted, and their executions carried out. Cross my planned career change to anti-Somalian spy off the list. Darn, and I was so looking forward to that too.

The fact is, we give criminals too much. We give them what they want – a place to lay their head, meals, and shoot, even an out of this wretched world. If they want to die early, then let them sit in the same concrete room day in and day out while they ponder how to do it with a tin cup and a Bible. Let their blood be on their own hands. It’ll give them something to do.
