So, yeah, I was asked to design a poster for the upcoming Kite Festival. They sent me last year's ... wow, I have a lot to live up to. There's no way I'll top that one. Below, last year's:
Furthermore, I didn't want to reinvent the wheel, you know? I mean, there's clouds, sky, kites ... I mean, how much can I do that isn't a carbon-copy of last year's?
So, off I start...
I have this great image in my head of kites, bearing many international flags flying in front of the building at which this event will take place. Unfortunately for me, it's just not feeling right (and it takes forever to figure out the best way to do the damn kites). Then I realize the picture I have is from winter (since, you know, I just took it) and bears numerous dead trees - and I don't want to have dead trees in a picture advertising an event in mid-April. So, I start using PhotoShop's various tools to make the dead tree disappear (and make the sky a beautiful blue).
Alas, I closed the stupid file without saving. Oops. All gone. All that work, nada.
I walked away from my computer last night, I just couldn't deal with it anymore. I had these kites with the flags, but now what? Then it hit me, let's do a variation of "Hands Across America" - only, instead of cute little kid silhouettes holding hands around a globe, I'd use my hard-earned flag kites.
Also, decide to put the event information on its own kite. Problem - the only logo I have is lifted off last year's poster, so all I have is that wretched gray background, so my kite must match that. Believe me, if I can change that color, I will.
So, here's what I have so far ... with wretched-colored kite, and sponsor placeholders.
My favorite part, to be honest, is the one that will most likely get cut - and that's the Simplified Chinese, Japanese, French and Spanish translations of the directions to the event. :)
