
Those hurt the most were more stunned than angry. Many sank into despair and shame after they could not find jobs. The suicide rates increased from 14 to 17 per 100,000. Protest that did occur was local, not national: "farm holidays," neighbors of foreclosed farmers refusing to bid on farms at auction, neighbors moving evicted tenants' furniture back in, and local hunger marches.

COSTA MESA Grief and anger swept through Costa Mesa City Hall on Thursday after a city worker jumped to his death shortly after being called in to get a layoff notice.
Huy Pham, 29, a city maintenance worker, jumped off the roof of the five-floor civic center just before 3:30 p.m. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Pham, who had been home nursing a broken ankle, wasn't supposed to work Thursday but was called in about 2:30 p.m. to receive his layoff notice.
