Cool Links: Jane Austen's Life and Times

Jane Austen and the Regency Period

Jane Austen wrote during the Regency Period in England. The Regency is the period of British history between 1811 and 1820 when the country was ruled by the king’s son, who had the title “the Prince Regent”, because the king himself, George III, was mentally ill. The period is known especially for the style of furniture typical of the time and for the neoclassical style of building based on the styles of ancient Greece and Rome. There are many examples of Regency buildings in Brighton, Bath, and around Regent’s Park in London.
The period is also marked by peculiar ways of dressing and social customs, such as dancing.
