A raven is a large shiny black bird with a black beak which makes a deep unmusical sound (croak). Some ravens live outside the Tower of London and it is said that something terrible will happen to England if they leave. A well-known poem by Edgar Allan Poe called The Raven features a raven who repeats the word "nevermore".
