Language & Geography: Everest

Mount Everest is the highest mountain in the world in the Himalayas, on the border bewteen Tibet and Nepal. Everest was first climbed in 1953 by Sir Edmund Hillary, from New Zealand and Tenzing Norgay, from Nepal, who were members of a British team. Older British people remember that the news reached the UK at the same time as the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. People sometimes mention the name “Everest” when they are talking about an extremely difficult achievement.
Scientists have made some progess, but they still have an Everest to climb.
