The myth of the "Noble Savage" is alive and well!
In Alaska, scientists find the remains of an ice age baby in a food pit and have a conference with local Indians. Then the wise men and women determine that the baby could not have have been eaten by the tribe. I have a "news flash" for the scientists - all barbarian cultures - including the European one, practiced cannibalism and infanticide.
The truth is when rations ran short, or a successful raid on a near by tribe resulted in captives, the ancient equivalent of "Friday Steak Night" happened on schedule. Yes, this truth ruins the picture of the "Noble Savage" of Hollywood vintage who lives as one with nature in a highly moral state that worshipped all the living creatures of Mother Earth. The reality of barbarian life was short, nasty, brutal and often ended as the "guest of honor" at "Friday Steak Night."
